Quaker Dialogues 6 : Diversity, Race & Citizenship
Mike Waits and Rob Berkeley

chair: Alec Davison

  • Is multicultural society in crisis? disturbances in some towns and cities; high levels of ethnic segregations between neighbourhoods; the threat from ‘home grown’ terrorists and an alienating government response; the emergence of an electorally successful far right…
  • The ‘community cohesion’ agenda has been promoted to address these issues. Is it working? What issues does it help with? And what new issues does it create?
  • How can we think through the dilemmas and find the directions so that we can live well as we are: together and different?

This will be a challenging afternoon of dialogue and fresh thinking.

Mike Waite works on these issues for local government in Burnley, Lancs. His key paper Combining Diversity with Common Citizenship, has just been published by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (follow link to download a copy)

Dr Rob Berkeley is Director of the Runnymede Trust, an independent policy-research organisation focusing on race equality and social justice. He works widely in the voluntary and education sectors, publishing his findings.
